January is a month synonymous for many with resolutions, plans and promises for the year ahead; goals people want to tick off their bucket list, and dreams and aspirations that come with the beginning of a not only a new year, but in this case a new decade. And so when it came to picking my January edit for the Curio Collection’s West Hotel Sydney. I wanted guests to be inspired, motivated and moved by my literary picks.
And while there have been many books that I’ve read over the past few months that I’ve loved, three really stood out to me when deciding what to choose for my January collaboration with the West Hotel Sydney.
One of my favourite non-fiction reads from 2019, and a book I truly think everyone should read, is Elizabeth Day’s incredible manifesto on failure, How to Fail. I read it during a particular turbulent time in my life; I had recently broken up with a long term boyfriend, and subsequently lost my home and my partner visa, which meant my future in Australia was uncertain. To say I felt like I was failing on an epic scale was something of an understatement, and so reading Day’s candid and witty exploration of failure was the perfect remedy to the place I had found myself in. I think it’s the perfect January read in that it serves as a reminder that from every failure there is growth, and that in itself is a lesson worth starting the year with.
My second choice for January is Lisa Messenger’s book, Work From Wherever. As someone who has dipped their toes in working remotely (during my stints in both Los Angeles and Bali) I loved Lisa’s honest and informative approach to the way in which workplaces are evolving, and her guidance and advice on how digital nomadism can work for everyone..
Finally, I chose Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Rich with beautiful prose, a pacy plot and a wonderful cast of characters, Where the Crawdads Sing has fostered a legion of loyal fans, and is a truly blissful read for anyone who wants to make 2020 the year that they read more books.
