My story
I’ve been an avid, ardent, borderline rabid reader for as long as I can remember. There simply is no before—no time in my life when I wasn’t a bookworm, and an obsessive one at that. My earliest memories are scattered with books: trips to the library, pastel-coloured Judy Blumes, faded Sweet Valley Highs, and dog-eared Point Horrors. Birthdays always meant a stack of novels, and childhood nights were spent reading by torchlight long after I should’ve been asleep. My dad’s constant pleas to read something—anything—more substantial than the American teen-lit I devoured like a life source were met with dramatic sighs. I still have the unread copy of I Am David by Anne Fine that he wanted me to read as a child—maybe this will finally be the year I get around to reading it. I’ve always consumed books as though they were as important as food or air – though to me, I suppose they are.
As a lifelong bookworm, I’ve always believed in the transformative power of books—for escapism, gaining fresh perspectives, and navigating life’s twists and turns. Bibliotherapy taps into this magic, using books as a tool for healing and self-discovery. It offers tailored reading suggestions to support emotional well-being, and my training as a bibliotherapist with Book Therapy allows me to spend even more of my time surrounded by books. Bibliotherapy is the perfect blend of two passions: well-being and my enduring love for books. Books are great for escapism and entertainment, but they can also be powerful tools for growth, healing, and connection.
What is bibliotherapy?
Bibliotherapy is the art of prescribing books for personal growth, healing, and well-being—think of it as your literary pharmacist. Whether it’s tackling stress, navigating life’s curveballs, or simply seeking a little more joy and meaning, bibliotherapy serves up the perfect read for the moment. The idea? The right book at the right time can deliver comfort, insight, and fresh perspectives. Let’s be honest—it’s a far more rewarding habit than doom-scrolling on Instagram.
Who is bibliotherapy for?
Books truly have something to offer everyone—whether you’re after comfort, guidance, or just a much-needed escape from the chaos of life. Alongside bibliotherapy sessions focused on well-being, I also help tackle those pesky literary conundrums: cultivating healthier reading habits, venturing into more diverse genres, or finally figuring out where to start with the classics (yes, Dostoevsky, I’m looking at you). Whatever your bookish goals, I’m here to help you get the most out of your reading life.
What happens in a bibliotherapy session?
Before our session, I’ll send you a quick questionnaire to get the lowdown on your reading habits and what you’d like to gain from our time together. Don’t worry—there are no right or wrong answers, and I’m not here to judge your secret love of cheesy romance novels or true crime binges (most of us have been there at some point in our reading life). Sessions usually happen over Zoom, though if you’re in Sydney or London, we might even make it an in-person affair (availability permitting). During our chat, we’ll dive into your reading life—favourite books, go-to genres, and even the habits you wish you had. Whether you’re looking for more time to read, some literary therapy for life’s curveballs, or a way to diversify your bookshelf, I’m here to help. Think of me as your personal shopper and stylist—but for books. Because let’s face it, a perfect reading list is the ultimate wardrobe upgrade for your mind.
