Gleebooks

Three kilometers south west of Sydney’s central business district lies the pretty peninsula of Glebe. Often overlooked in favor of Sydney’s more glamorous inner-city suburbs, Glebe is home to a vibrant cultural community with a plethora of eateries and boutiques to rival any of its sister suburbs. Certainly its biggest gem is the glorious Gleebooks. Located on the leafy Glebe Point Road, this two-floor bookstore is something of an institution among both local dwellers and lovers of literature all over the city.

I first visited Gleebooks back in February when holidaying in Sydney, on the back of a recommendation from my friend Dave whose mother lives in the neighbourhood. But with a number of the BBC Top 100 left to buy and my newly bought iPad still in its packaging I figured it was the perfect excuse for a second sojourn.

For me, the best thing about Gleebooks is the homely ambience it offers; unlike other bookstores who are pristine inter presentation, there is an intimate and informal atmosphere that truly allows its customers to get lost among the shelves on unread tales. As well as offering books in abundance covering every topic imaginable, Gleebooks also has a stellar calendar of events from literary launches to book readings, that run throughout the year. Thus, whether Glebe is on your doorstep or a crow-city trip away, this haven of books is absolutely worth a visit.
