A wizarding weekend at Georgian House Hotel

Georgian House Hotel

Wizards have long been a staple in both classic and contemporary literature, and Georgian House Hotel in Pimlico has paid homage to these legendary characters with their evocative enchanted chambers, themed afternoon tea and magical cocktail making experience. And so, during my summer sojourn to London, I jumped at the chance to visit this boutique hotel, and to immerse myself in its wizarding world.  Featuring communal areas that are decorated in period style while retaining a more contemporary feel thanks to the stylish wallpaper and soft furnishings, oil paintings give a nod to the hotel’s rich heritage and  plush sofas and chairs perfect for snuggling into with the Sunday papers, it truly is a tasteful treat in the heart of historic London.

Nestled in the heart of Pimlico, and just a short walk from Victoria Station, Georgian House Hotel is located on a smart street in Westminster, home to both luxury townhouses and hotels alike. Boasting an elegant entrance flanked by smart potted trees, the hotel’s location is one of its many highlights, and offers guests easy access to both central London, the stylish shops that line the King’s Road and Pimlico’s popular Elizabeth Street – which has a wonderfully villagey vibe, despite its close proximity to nearby Belgravia and Chelsea.

The hotel is home to fifty-seven rooms, of varying size and style, including two enchanted chambers which are perfect for any would-be wizards. Compact and cosy without sacrificing on style, we stayed in a Belgravia Boutique Room, whose highlights included a calming colour palette, stylish headboard, a stand-alone roll-top tub, and an intricately tiled floor in the bathroom. With White Company toiletries, fluffy dressing gowns, a Nespresso coffee machine and a well stocked mini bar, it offered an idyllic place to retreat to after an afternoon pounding the pavements of the nearby King’s Road.

Food and drink

The bright breakfast room serves an impressive buffet for hotel guests; and while the splendid spread is a great start to the day, the hotel’s Wizard Afternoon Tea and Cocktail Experience is undoubtedly its pièce de résistance. Ladled out in the Pimlico Pantry, the immersive dining experience is as atmospheric as it is tasty, and is rich with mystery and magic a-plenty.

Worth staying in bed for

For fans of fictional wizards, there are a plethora of books to choose from should you wish to spend a morning in bed with your nose between the pages of an enchanted tome. Tolkein’s epic masterpiece, The Hobbit, and the subsequent three volumes of Lord of the Rings is renowned for its much-loved wizard Gandalf, who is leader of the Fellowship of the Rings and one of literature’s most esteemed sorcerers. And, of course, Harry Potter has a wealth of wizards throughout the seven-strong series of fantastical tales. Whether a loyal Dumbledore fan or staunch Voldermort opponent, few works of fiction are quite so bewitching or full of fantasy as J.K. Rowling’s beloved books.
